Android phones and mens shirts among the Christmas treats in 2011

30 Dec 2011

Android phones proved as popular as crease free shirts this Christmas, after Google revealed that 3.7 million of the mobile devices were activated over the last weekend.

Quality shirts have always been a staple gift for the discerning gentleman, but recent years have seen smartphones emerge as the must have accessory for the modern man.

Mobile apps for these smartphone users have proven equally popular, with statistics from Flurry Analytics showing that a total of 242 million were downloaded on Christmas day.

According to the data, the period between 7pm and 10pm on the big day was the busiest time for downloads, with many revellers no doubt settling down following a hearty Christmas dinner.

Speaking to the BBC, former Mobile magazine editor James Atkinson pointed to the growing popularity of cheaper smartphones that provide a lower cost companion to any slim fit shirts.

"What you have, certainly with the Android, is that there's been a steady push for cheaper smartphones, which do just as much as the top end models,” he said.
