Are party shirts more of a classic than the Breton?

3 Aug 2010

There seems to have been a certain amount of crossover between male and female fashion trends in recent months, but party shirts may continue to be a better option for guys than the popular Breton top.

the Guardian's Hadley Freeman recently claimed that the striped top is showing its staying power within women's fashion circles, despite ladies typically being warned that horizontal stripes can make them appear wider.

However, when the newspaper's male fashion commentator Alexis Petridis decided to leave his usual men's shirts at home during his recent visit to Glastonbury festival in favour of a Breton, he quickly realised he had made "a terrible error of judgement".

"It wasn't the Breton shirt so much as the fact that I'd teamed it with a fisherman's cap, which I thought had about it the look of John Lennon on the cover of Help!" he explained.

Mr Petridis acknowledged that his fashion faux-pas resulted in his friends asking him whether he had come in fancy dress, which may mean that a style that works well on women is best avoiding by men.
