Expert advises guys to stick to button down collar shirts

19 Aug 2010

The latest trend for low-cut V-necks on men is not something that generally goes down well with the ladies, according to one style expert - who urged guys to stick to button down collar shirts if they wish to impress.

The Daily Mail's fashion expert Liz Jones was commenting on men's shirts following an increasing trend among male celebrities for stepping out in a low-cut top that reveals half of their neck.

Indeed, this week Jude Law was snapped wearing such a top, which was so low cut it was almost invisible underneath his smart grey jacket.

And such garments are also increasingly being seen on the catwalk, with US menswear designer Michael Bastian telling the newspaper the tops allow male models to show off their toned physiques.

Other celebrities spotted giving their chests an airing include comedian Russell Brand, Gossip Girl actor Ed Westwick and star of The Tudors Jonathan Rhys-Meyers.

However, Ms Jones warned that ladies are likely to view guys in scooped T-shirts as vain.

"Women don't want to see a man's cleavage. Far more sexy is a buttoned-up shirt and a narrow tie, or a polo neck, or a cashmere sweater with a very high V," she added.

One actor who certainly appeared not to want to display his chest this week was Michael Cera, who hit the red carpet for the Scott Pilgrim Vs The World premier in a plaid shirt done all the way up, red tie and jacket and maroon cords.
