Lionel Messi could smarten up his act with better formal shirts

10 Jan 2012

Lionel Messi may have picked up the Ballon d'Or award last night, but his choice of formal suits and mens shirts means he will not be winning any plaudits for style.

Last night's FIFA Ballon d'Or Awards saw stars from across the world of football descend on Zurich for the gala event.

There was little doubt to the star of the evening either, as Argentinean playmaker supreme Lionel Messi picked up the award as the player of year.

It marked the third time he picked up the award, putting him alongside treble-winning legends like Marco Van Basten, Johann Cruyff and Michel Platini.

But while Messi may be ahead in the footballing stakes, when it came to dress sense, rival player Wayne Rooney remained very much in the lead.

Sporting a classic black suit and evening shirt combination, Wayne Rooney took many of the style plaudits, as he posed on the red carpet alongside South American siren Shakira.

Rooney is not one necessarily linked with effortless cool, but his fashion choice in this instance proved spot on and in keeping with much of the attire on display last night.

Messi meanwhile appeared in a purple velvet suit and formal shirt mix that while striking, may perhaps have been better left in the wardrobe on this occasion.

After all, when it comes to a high-profile occasions such as this, the best advice is always to keep any shirt and suit attire simple with a focus on quality over any unique design.

A classic fit white shirt with a moderate cut collar for instance, is the ideal dress accompaniment for nearly any formal social event.

Still, at 24-years-old, there is plenty of time for Messi to improve his dress sense, and his football skills for that matter.
