Men's Shirts and Gadget NewsScientists create men's shirts out of tea25 Aug 2010
The ingredients of tea have been used in a unique way by scientists to grow a new fabric with which to make clothing. Researchers at Imperial College London have combined green tea, sugar and nutrients to create a soup that nourishes the bacteria used to form the material for men's shirts through the production of cellulose filaments that bond together. Created along with fashion designers from the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and dubbed the "tea shirt" by the Telegraph, the sustainable garment is very lightweight and has a similar appearance to papyrus. It can be dyed, treated and moulded into a range of different forms and has a leather-like texture. The translucent material has been developed to meet growing demand for fabrics and address increasing pressure on natural resources as a result. Meanwhile, entrepreneurs Bradley Rose and Oliver Van Emden recently unveiled shirts made from a special fabric that prevents a build up of sweat under the armpits during warm weather.
