Should mens shirts always be tucked in?

13 Dec 2011

Gents who are hoping to sharpen up their sense of style may find they are able to do so by picking up some new mens shirts.

A wide variety of options are available to choose from, which could make one the perfect fit for almost any occasion, providing males have a wardrobe that is well stocked enough to cope.

However, some individuals may be uncertain of how to wear a particular style of shirt, with whether it should be tucked in or out being just one of the potential dilemmas that might be holding them back from throwing on a new purchase.

A GQ reader by the name of Ian wrote to the magazine with this very problem, asking its style shrink Robert Johnston whether there is a definitive answer to the right and wrong ways of wearing a shirt.

"I have always been under the impression that there was a hard and fast rule of short sleeve out and long sleeve tucked in," he told the publication.

In response, Mr Johnston noted that he is normally wary of providing such a response as trends as liable to change at any given moment, which could leave him at risk of wanting to go against his own advice.

However, in this case he suggested he is happy to oblige with a "definitive" response.

"I would also say all casual shirts, whether sleeves are long or short, should be untucked so, for example, a button-down plaid number by Polo Ralph Lauren should be worn outside jeans," the expert stated.

He noted that ties should be avoided for those opting for a short sleeved style of mens cotton shirts, while they should also be untucked. Meanwhile, smart shirts should always be tucked in.

One famous face that could inspire the dress sense of others is Tom Cruise, as he recently sported a white mens shirt and two-piece black suit at the premiere of Mission: Impossible 4 in Dubai.
